Finding Balance
Happy Spring! Welcome to warmer weather (finally), longer days, and balancing life with writing/work goals in this season of more activity and distractions. How do you stay focused?
I love Spring. I do. I love watching nature awaken from its slumber. The daffodils, the tulips, and the birds nesting outside my window. But what I always find most challenging this time of year is staying on track with my writing goals. My kayak calls my name, the bike trail, and the beach. Sigh. I want to enjoy this season of warm weather and emerging new life in nature, but how??
My best time for writing is 5 am, or earlier sometimes. I know, I know, it’s not for everyone. But hear me out. It’s quiet, it's semi-dark, and I can hear my own thoughts. I went to hear Kate DiCamillo once in Boston. I just love her as a storyteller and a person. I asked her what her writing routine is, and she said: I get up at 5 am before my inner editor wakes up, start my coffee, and light a candle to mark the beginning of my writing session. I like that. I like it because it’s a routine and it works for her. I’m a big believer in routines. What works for you? Do you have a morning routine? Or are you a night owl?
Whatever you do to get yourself motivated and in the mindset to write, be creative, or get yourself off to work, keep going! And on days when the sun is shining, and the outdoors calls you, go, go answer that call because rainy days will come, and you’ll embrace your routine again. Remember, we can’t always be productive; our minds need a rest so we can resume our 5am routine.
Again, thank you for being a loyal subscriber. Leave a comment for me, I love hearing from you.

I love to journal early morning when everything is quiet and calm. I wait to look at my phone or laptop so I can hear my thoughts and set my intentions for the day. I have a favorite spot where I can see and hear my birds while I let my own flow!Reply by: Kate Lynch Books
Love that, Kelly!! Helps set up for a better day, don't you think? Thanks for sharing your routine. XXShare This Blog
