BIG Things Come in Small Packages
Wednesday, May 28, 2025 by Kate Lynch

I’m not a big person. I’m 5’3 and shrinking, but I’ve come to realize that BIG things come in small packages. Never underestimate your ‘big thing’ and the influence you can have on your loved ones, your community, and possibly the world.

Recently, I explored a bookstore and found this little gem. Inside this lovely pin was a story titled ‘Sea Tea.’ That gave me the idea about BIG things can come in small packages. A few days later I attended a workshop presented by an organization called Beyond Plastics, out of Bennington College in Vermont. They help promote change in communities concerning single-use plastics. Living by the ocean, I wanted to do something to help end the use of single-use plastics that end up in the ocean and harm sea life. My goal is to collaborate with local town administrators to ban plastic straws on Cape Cod and raise awareness in our communities. AND, I continue to search for a publisher for my picture book S IS FOR A SHIVER OF SHARKS for kids 4-7 that brings awareness of ocean plastic and trash around the world and how kids can help. I’ll keep you posted!

How Do We Stay Motivated For Our BIG Thing?

Eye On The Prize

Put those headphones in! Don’t listen to the naysayers. Listen to your own voice. That voice deep inside that reminds you every morning when you wake up of your longings and your purpose for being on this Earth. Some days are easier than others. Believe me, I know! It’s easier to be brought down by fear and doubt than it is to stand tall for that fire inside. But ask yourself, what do you have to lose?

Limit Distractions

Target your biggest distractions and squash them like a bug! My biggest distraction? (waves hand) My phone. Do I need to check every notification that comes in or my email for a reply from an agent? No. I literally have to plug my phone into its charger in the other room and forget it even exists. Distractions are there to distract you; that’s their job. Remember one thing: you have other plans.

Commit

What’s the reason why you quit that day job? To make a difference in this world and to make your dreams come true. It’s all about commitment. Every day, I try to dedicate at least fifteen minutes to my current project or craft. Whether it’s jotting down notes about a new picture book, my current work in progress, or my next blog post. When we put energy into something, the Universe listens. What do we do when we get discouraged? We get right back to it! No delay. Each setback or rejection is a re-direction and gets us closer to a yes.

Are you ready for YOUR BIG thing??

Let me know your thoughts! I’d love to hear from you.

When you think about it, we're all pretty stinkin' small... We live in a GINORMOUS universe. So using the undeniably "small" things we have for good, is a really good thing. Thanks for the reminder, Kate!

I was on a long flight recently and watched a documentary called, “2040” which in part, is about single-use plastics. Wow, was it an eye opener! It also has encouraging things that are happening now that will help us and more importantly, our children and their futures. Look for it streaming.

Hi Kate, I love reading your posts! Thanks for sharing them. Yay for your commitment to such worthwhile endeavors. The Universe does indeed listen and will deliver - although not always in the ways we imagine. My fingers are crossed for the picture book sale.!
